CEA
The Atomic and Renewable Energies Commission (CEA), is a prominent player in the European Research Area, with an internationally acknowledged level of expertise in its core competencies: low-carbon energies, defence and security, information technologies and health technologies. CEA is engaged in collaborative projects with leading academic and industrial partners.
In SHERLOHCK project, CEA’s Innovation Laboratory for Renewable Energy Technologies Liten, carries out the development of active, selective, stable and low PGM catalysts for the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of a selected liquid organic hydrogen carriers, whilst adopting the use of alternative and green processes (MOCVD, supercritical CO2).
Thermo-fluidic modelling approaches coupling with 3D-printing technologies are implemented to reach reactors design optimization and to identify issues in components upscaling.

Evonik Operations GmbH
Evonik Operations GmbH is a corporation consistently aligned to high-margin specialty chemistry with headquarter in Essen / Germany. The business focus lies on expansion of activities in growth regions, and the development of future-oriented technologies. The specialty chemicals operations are divided into four chemical manufacturing divisions, namely Specialty Additives, Nutrition & Care, Smart Materials and Performance Materials, which operate close to their markets and customers in over 100 countries around the world.
As part of Smart Materials, the Business Line Catalysts lives up to the principles of resource efficiency and thus, the basic idea in project SHERLOHCK.
The RD&I group of Evonik Catalysts supports the team in the implementation of industrial specifications and associated properties during catalyst development.
Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies
Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies adds the missing link to high-performing hydrogen value chains globally. Based on its proprietary and proven Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology with Benzyltoluene as carrier medium, the midstream player allows for superior, flexible hydrogen supply to consumers in industry and mobility across the globe – utilizing conventional liquid-fuel infrastructure. As the leading LOHC pioneer, Hydrogenious offers (de-)hydrogenation plants and O&M services, ensuring safe, easy and efficient hydrogen storage, transport and distribution. With its >100 staff members and strategic investors AP-Ventures, Covestro, Hyundai Motor Company, Mitsubishi Corporation, Royal Vopak and Winkelmann Group, the German-based SME is a major enabler and accelerator for the energy transition.
North-West University (NWU)
The North-West University (NWU) is a public research university located on three campuses in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark in South Africa. The head offices of the university are located on the Potchefstroom campus. With its merged status, the North-West University became one of the largest universities in South Africa with the second largest student population (full-time and distance education) in the country. The HySA Infrastructure forms a Centre of Competence which is co-hosted by the NWU and CSIR ( https://hysainfrastructure.com/ ). It is the intention of HySA Infrastructure CoC to be a world leader and commercial relevant entity in the area of hydrogen production (electrolytic hydrogen linked to solar recourses), in the area of hydrogen compression and storage/delivery by using LOHC technology.
UPV/EHU
University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), SUPREN – Sustainable Process Engineering Group-, is a research group part of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao. Its different R&D activities are focused on the development of sustainable thermo-catalytic processes, being hydrogen production, usage and storage one of the main activities carried out during the last years. SUPREN group is involved in competitive international, national and regional research projects but also collaborates with companies finding more applied solutions.
FAU
Located in Franconia in northern Bavaria, the FAU is a public research university with campuses mainly in Erlangen and Nuremberg. It is one of the largest universities of the state of Bavaria, offering research opportunities in five faculties.
Within the Faculty of Engineering, the Institute for Chemical Reaction Engineering (CRT) develops catalyst systems for industrially relevant chemical reactions towards increased productivity, selectivity and reduced costs and ecological impact. Together with the development of novel materials for application in chemical processes, the CRT aims to intensify the production of chemicals in order to gain a better ecological and economical footprint.
